Abstract

The semen of Nubian goats was white to creamy white in colour, averaged 1.5 ml in volume, and had 1.77 × 109 sperm/ml. The total spermatozoa per ejaculate was 2.7 × 109 and 86% were active, 6.7% had primary and 15.3% secondary abnormalities. The concentration of fructose in semen was 213 mg 100 ml; the citric acid concentration 68 mg 100 ml, and the activity of alkaline phosphatase 218 IU 100 ml. The testosterone concentration in blood plasma was 1.3 ng/ml. The average dimensions of the scrotum were 16.1 cm (lateral curved length) 20.6 cm (circumference). Nubian goats seem to provide better quality semen than other breeds of goats, and in some traits their semen was superior to that of Desert sheep.
