Abstract

This paper proposes a new time-frequency distribution (TFD) based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The TFD, referred to as the EMD-TFD, is developed using a multiple view approach formulated in the ambiguity domain. The individual intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of the EMD are used to construct each view in the ambiguity domain and an adaptive filter is centered around the signal energy. This filter utilises the fact that the IMFs correspond closely to the definition of signal components in the time-frequency domain and a multiple view approach will remove the intercomponent cross-terms. The comparison of the EMD-TFD to several other TFDs using two correlation measures shows improved performance.
