N2 - The senior or final year project has a numerous advantage for students, as it wraps up the fundamental topics which are well addressed in different undergraduate courses and at the same time improves soft a skills and technical skills for students, specially design aspects. In the college of Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University which is ABET, (the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), accredited since 2008, the final year project is divided into two semesters where semester 1 given in fall term while semester 2, is completed in the spring term. Although each term has its own credits but the project topic is in progress between the two terms. This paper, which is divided into two parts, introduces the final year project structure for a project introduced in petroleum and chemical engineering department, chemical program, under the topic of designing an Ammonia production plant. The problem statement and project objectives guided by project tasks are introduced in this part. Moreover, project structure, supervision, grouping and grading policy are highlighted. The evaluation processs, the performance of the students undertaking the project, and students' feedback (59 students) for a questionnaire targeted this project is introduced in part II.
