ملخص

The fruit of Punica granatum L. Punicaccae has been widely used since ancient times. In the past decade; scientists have been researching on pomegranate fruit by analyzing its nutrition, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, medical properties, or even cosmetic properties. These studies are the results of increasing awareness of the health benefits of functional fruits. Pomegranate is a nutritious fruit containing carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and most importantly, antioxidants. Evidence from literature showed medicinal effects of different parts of pomegranate to prevent varied chronic or common illnesses. In this chapter, a focus on the potential of pomegranate in medicine, food industry, and pharmaceuticals is presented, with emphasis on its nutrition and active components, and possible toxicity of the pomegranate skin. Pomegranate showed protective effects, such as breast cancer, menopausal syndrome, thyroid dysfunctions, injured cells, diabetes, inflammations, influenza, prostate cancer, brain damage, Alzheimer's disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, artery stenosis, dental problems, male infertility, erectile dysfunction, obesity and other health issues.
