ملخص

Laboratory tests were carried out to study the effect of diesel and gasoline on the geotechnical properties of two sands. The various tests conducted were Atterberg limits, compaction, permeability and direct shear tests. The specimens were prepared by mixing sands with gasoline and diesel in the amount of 0%, 5% and 10% by dry weight. The results indicated a decrease in permeability, optimum moisture content, angle of shearing resistance and increase in Atterberg limits and cohesion with the increase in the content of diesel and gasoline in both the sands. Contamination by gasoline and diesel has marginally increased the maximum dry unit weight. The increase in liquid limit, plastic limit and cohesion was higher with diesel than with gasoline for both the sands. The reduction in optimum moisture content, permeability, angle of shearing resistance was higher with diesel than with gasoline for both the sands.
