Abstract
The progressing urbanization in developing countries is particularly visible in the growth of Mega Cities. It extends however as well to other big cities and causes similar problems there. In Egypt, one fifth of the population lives in the Cairo metropolitan region, but the "other" cities are home to even more people. And they grow even faster than the metropolis. The study of Minya, capital of a province in Upper Egypt reveals the importance of cities beyond the metropolis of Cairo. It illustrates as well the specific problems that occur here.
