Abstract

Geographical Information System (GIS) has emerged in the last decade as an essential tool for urban and resource planning and management. Its ability to store, retrieve, analyze, model and map large volume of spatial data is considered as its main strength. The purpose of this pilot investigation was to conduct a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) to examine the role of GIS on the knowledge management and decision making at Muscat Municipality in Oman. Data was collected through a questionnaire from knowledge workers, administrators and developers of GIS. The study found that the main strengths of the GIS were its effectiveness and efficiency, while its main weaknesses were the lack of the GIS experienced users and data quality. On the other hand, GIS' added values and increased awareness were considered as the most favorable opportunities of the GIS, whereas privacy and security issues were some of its threats.
