Abstract

In today's volatile business environment, most organizations are facing significant pressures to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their operational, tactical, and strategic processes. Information technology (IT) has become an attractive mean to improve these processes. Electronic Trading System (ETS) is an IT tool that has been deployed at Muscat Securities Market (MSM) in Oman to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of securities trading and decision making process. This study aimed to investigate the role of ETS at MSM by examining the benefits and challenges of using ETS. Data was collected through interviews and questionnaires from ETS users (administrative staff and brokerage companies). Findings suggested that main benefits were improved information access, improved time saving, improved decision making, improved information accuracy and improved system reliability, whereas the challenges were mainly technical challenges such as system complexity, technical probelms, netwrok problems lack of users' experience, and limited system functionalities.
