Abstract
Many people believe that adding extra words to the meta tags "keywords" and "Description" in Web site pages will magically increase the search engine ranking of their sites. This used to be true, but, because so many people misused these meta tags, search engines nowadays use more sophisticated ranking strategies. Exploring these strategies is the primary aim of this research. The research was divided into two parts. First discover how search engines work, and second, provide guidelines for Web designers on how to optimize their Web pages to increase their visibility. The authors provide a short history of the most important search engines, differentiate between them in term of functionality, and review the approach they use to crawl, index and display search results. Finally, the paper concludes with a set of recommendation to enhance Website visibility and ranking.
