Abstract

Neurodegenerative disorders, memory loss and cognitive disabilities associated with it, are afflicting the modern society at an exponential rate. These conditions cannot be just considered as part of aging. A healthy, functional brain is the ultimatum for memory, learning, and coordination. The therapeutic chemical agents for brain dysfunction are never free from critical side effects. So exploring the natural plants or its parts for better brain health is gaining importance. Hibiscus Sabdariffa is an edible plant which has been used in traditional medicine. The rich flavanoids and polyphenolic content of the plant makes it a potential antioxidant. The antioxidant property of H. sabdariffa helps in trashing out the free radicals generated as a result of oxidative stress. The free radical damage is the absolute cause for many of the dreadful conditions including, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease. This review discusses the benefits of H. sabdariffa for better brain health and thus as a solution for most of the cognitive ailments.
