Abstract

Cellulose is widely utilized as a major source of energy and raw material for the bioconversion of renewable lignocellulosic biomass. Cellulases, capable of degrading cellulose, has significance industrial importance and contributes around 20% of the global enzyme market. Cellulase is the major enzyme used in biorefinery studies using cellulose as a renewable substrate. In this chapter, cellulase enzyme, lignocelluloses, catalytic mechanisms of cellulases, the classification of cellulase, microorganisms producing cellulases, recent advances in cellulase production and production of cellulase using recombinant DNA technology were discussed.
