### Abstract

It is pointed out that the important stage in designing earth installations is seepage calculation and the calculation of stability of such installations. To make such calculations, a great variety of criteria should be selected. To eliminate this defect, the author suggests and describes an optimization approach. Based on this approach, the integral pressure is assessed, and the size of the coffer-dam is optimized for the case of seepage on the depression surface of the earth mass. Diagrams designed to estimate integral pressure and the size of the coffer-dam are given.
