Occupational burnout and job satisfaction: Evidence from secondary schools in Northern Cyprus

Abstract

This study aims the level of occupational burnout and job satisfaction of the physical education teachers who work in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) secondary schools. Also the study analyses the relationship between these two concepts. With the survey method, the data were collected from 62 female and 49 male teachers, who work in TRNC secondary schools. And some suggestions are developed regarding topic by evaluating the collected data. In the research, data were collected by applying Personal Information Form, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale. According to results from research; (1) While the genders of physical education teachers are the determiner on the level of personal success, it is stated that gender factor is not a determiner on emotion-al exhaustion and desensitization in terms of differences of job satisfaction. (2) There is no significant difference due to age variable and years of professional service in job satisfaction and burnout. (3) It is demonstrated that the decline which is in feeling of personal success and emotional exhaustion, is seen in mostly married teachers. This research is important due to the fact that there haven’t been done such a detailed research in TRNC, and that it would contribute and offer suggestions to the research which will be done in this field.
