Design of a smart traffic information system

Abstract

Traffic congestion is a challenging problem that causes crowdedness, time waste, and sometimes harmful accidents. The paper proposes a smart traffic information system that monitors the routes and pick-up the best destination route, the least crowded route, to save time and reduce the number of accidents. The system is camera based to get the status of the different routes. The obtained video streams will be processed, analyzed, and then the determined best route will regularly be stored on a server that can be remotely accessed. The system has a web-based application that facilities its managements and provides useful information about the roads to the authorized personal. A complete prototype was implemented for this system and it was tested thoroughly.
