Abstract

We investigate the interactions responsible for the antiferroelectric behaviour of bi-mesogen low molar mass organosiloxane liquid-crystal material. We find that the behaviour is controlled by the conformation of the siloxane link between the two mesogens. The bent conformation of the siloxane link containing three silicon atoms appears to be the ideal one to impose the antiferroelectric order to a material that would otherwise be ferroelectric.
