Abstract
Blood donation is an important concern for the society. Information technologies, such as expert systems, help to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the blood donation assessment process. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the process of developing an expert system that enables blood donation self-assessment. Developing the system began with eliciting knowledge from various sources such as: interviews, journal articles, websites, applications, and paper based donation forms. Moreover, a decision table was developed to build the logic for the blood donation self-assessment. The decision-table logic is converted into if/then rules which represent the knowledge-base for the developed Blood Donation Self-assessment System. Finally, the developed system was evaluated by different users including doctors and potential donors to assess the strengths, weaknesses and the characteristics of the system.
