Abstract

Asynchronous communication tools such as online discussion forums are one of the digital technologies that are accessible through various Learning Management Systems like Moodle, Edmodo, EduCal, etc. It is argued that in addition to facilitating student-teacher communication, involving students in such forums brings about several learning gains. This presentation aims to shed light on the potential and limitations of student participation in online discussion forums in a virtual learning environment and to suggest practical solutions to maximize the effectiveness of this teaching and learning method. This presentation is particularly relevant to EFL educators, prospective teachers, teacher trainers, as well as students.
