Abstract

The date palm is a major agricultural crop in Oman. However, pests and diseases have led to a decrease in date production. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the development process of a date palm expert system prototype. Developing the system began with eliciting knowledge from a variety of sources, including interviews, books, journal articles, and websites. Decision tables were used to build the logic of the date palm expert system. Then, the logic was converted to system language in the form of if-then rules in eXpertise2Go freeware rules-based shell. The developed system prototype was then reviewed by specialists and a number of potential users in order to assess its characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses.
