Abstract

This chapter looks back at about hundred years of research on red rot of sugarcane in India. Aspects like epidemics caused due to red rot of sugarcane in India and the associated quantitative and qualitative losses have been highlighted. Some of the basic and advanced researches on the pathogen morphology and molecular characterization of Colletotrichum falcatum, diagnostic methods and the induction of systemic resistance against the pathogen have been described.
