Abstract

The current study aimed to explore self-esteem of Sultan Qaboos University’s PE students. The study also aimed to determine the relationship between student’s self-esteem and their academic performance and their physical fitness levels.
To collect the data of the study, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory has been administered to assess the levels of self-esteem among the subjects (N=102). General GPA as criteria of academic performance and practical courses GPA as a physical fitness pointer have been calculated.
In order to achieve the objectives of the study, Descriptive Statistics, T-tests, Correlation Coefficients, and One Way ANOVA have been used.
The results of the study indicated that Self-esteem levels of SQU’s students was above average and improved gradually during the years of study in the university. The study also explored that there is a positive significant correlation between self-esteem and the academic performance. Marginal correlation between self-esteem and physical fitness has been appeared. No significant differences founded between females and males on their scores on Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory.
The study recommended that physical education and sport related course to be offer to all students in the university, and farther studies should be conducted in on Omani schools’ environment to explore the effects of physical education programs on the students’ self -esteem.
