Abstract
The study aimed to explore the level of self-esteem of Omani female athletes, and their attitudes towards sport activities. The study also aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and attitudes towards sport activities.
To achieve the goals of the study, two instruments have been used: the first for assessing self-esteem, while the other for assessing attitudes towards sport activities which consisted of four sub-domains (1) sport activity viewed as a means of achieving fitness, (2) social experience, (3) adventure and excitement, and, (4) competitiveness. The two instruments were administered on a sample of 166 female Omani athletes from Muscat schools' sports teams within the age category 12 to 15 years.
The results of the study indicated that the sample subjects possesses high levels of self-esteem, and that they viewed sport activities as a way to acquire health and fitness, competitiveness, adventure and excitement, and social experience, respectively.
The study also revealed that there are significant differences between self-esteem on the one hand, and attitudes towards the health and fitness outcomes of sport activities, attitudes towards social experiences of sport activities, and attitudes towards competitiveness, on the other hand. No significant correlation between self-esteem and attitudes towards the adventure and excitement experience of sport activities has been found.
