Abstract

The French critic and thinker Tzvetan Todorov differentiates between “sign” and “symbol”, making sign a linguistic signifier from which the recipient understands the literal connotation that the phonetic, morphological and syntactic units of the text lead him to, and makes sign a linguistic or non-linguistic signifier that leads to the unsaid meaning of a discourse in which the linguistic units cooperate with the conventions and the common knowledge that they have and the situation. Thus, Tzvetan Todorov equates the process of symbolization with the process of producing the unsaid. The founder of instrumental philosophy, the American philosopher Charles Sander Peirce (1839-1914 AD) dealt with in his semiotic and logical researches the indirect meaning, in his talk about the dynamic object, dynamic interpretant, final interpretant, continuum and the role of the recipient in the interpretation of the symbol. Our aim in this study is to research Peirce’s theory of the structures responsible for making symbolization in its concept presented by Tzvetan Todorov, and then to give examples of these structures from the novel “A Testimony of Wartime” published in 2015 by the Omani writer Muhammad Al-Araimi, with an explanation of the artistic value of these symbolic structures. The study seeks to achieve the following objectives: 1. Explanation of the theory of signs from its original sources, which are the works of its American founder Charles Sanders Pierce, sources that have not been translated into Arabic. 2. Differentiating between types of signs, types of objects, and types of interpretant. 3. Testing the validity of theory in practice; To know the faces of the shortcomings, and the faces of good. 4. Contribute to the critical aspect of semiotic analysis.
