Developing Commercially Viable Graphene Based Technology for selected energy and environmental applications in Oman

Project: Other project

Project Details

Description

Graphene exhibits extraordinary physical and chemical properties, which makes it a platform for a myriad of low cost but effective products and technologies. Graphene and its composites can be fabricated in many ways, and can be tailor-made for specific applications. This novelty is set to reverberate throughout many industries, enhancing performance, bringing down costs, and encouraging business startups and investment. The global market for graphene and its products is set to reach 200 Million USD by 2026. The challenges that Oman and rsquo;s and the regions and rsquo; energy and environment sector face can immensely benefit from advancing graphene based technology. This strategic research project aims to develop deep scientific understanding of the advantages of graphene in certain areas of corrosion, environmental pollution, and oil production issues, consequently uncovering new technologies, which can be commercialized. Hydrophobic/Oleophobic graphene based coatings will be investigated which can assist in suppressing corrosion, avoiding clogging of water, oil and gas, and wastewater pipelines. Remediation of environment pollutants such as low-level radioactive nuclides, pharmaceutical, and organic contamination in potable and ground water will be addressed with graphene/polymer membranes.
