ملخص

The United Arab Emirates, as part of the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the birthplaces of herbal therapies. Herbal therapy today is considered a significant part of this country's heritage and has been introduced into the health-care system, especially in the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis and peptic ulcer. A regular pharmacological screening programme has been initiated to evaluate traditional herbal recipes as well as the local flora for their efficacy and safety, with special emphasis on anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and antibiotic activity. Those plants found to possess promising activity are further investigated for isolation of their active ingredients. Natural product research presents an opportunity for discovering chemical substances with novel pharmacological mechanisms or novel compounds that could serve as lead structures.
