Various strategies and techniques are expounded, with examples and some cost comparisons, in sections on: mechanical weed control (categorized according to the point in the crop's life cycle at which tillage is employed); weed control prior to herbicide introduction; cultural weed control (by competitive and/or allelopathic crops, allelopathic crop residues, intercropping, "relay' intercropping of soybeans Glycine max into standing winter grain, and living mulches involving intercropping of a low-growing cover crop, biological weed control (classical biological control for the control of perennial weeds and "mycoherbicides'); herbicides from natural compounds; new herbicide technology; bioengineering contributions; weed thresholds and modelling; integrated weed management; and future prospects. -J.W.Cooper
