ملخص

This chapter gives a detailed overview regarding the use of pristine chars as well as pre- and/or postmodified chars for environmental applications. It is divided mainly into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the elimination of heavy metals and organic compounds, including dyes, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatments. The second part is devoted to the removal of the main pollutants from gaseous effluents such as CO2, H2S, CH4, SO2, and NOx.The impact of various parameters regarding the pyrolysis process on the produced chars' physicochemical characteristics (porosity, specific surface area, and functional groups development) and also on their performance for pollutants adsorption are presented and discussed. For each studied pollutant family, a detailed overview of the main involved mechanisms is analyzed. Finally, conclusions regarding the main outputs of this extensive scientific literature overview and their core limitations are synthesized.
