ملخص

A carbonaceous sorbent was prepared from date palm leaflets via sulfuric acid treatment. The ability of the prepared sorbent to remove Hg(II) (chloride media) and Pb(II) (nitrate media) from aqueous solutions was investigated by following the influence of various parameters such as contact time, pH, metal ion concentration and temperature. Kinetics data followed a pseudo second order rate expression for both metals with a much faster sorption for Pb(II) than for Hg(II). Sorption was low at low initial pH and increases as pH increases with a decrease in the final pH indicating protons release in solution and ion exchange mechanism. Equilibrium data were found to fit well the Langmuir equation with increased sorption as temperature rises. Hg(II) was reduced to the insoluble Hg2Cl2 crystals on the sorbent surface indicating Hg(II) reduction.
