inflows of immigration from many of Arabic and Asian countries. That was a result of the labor market’s need to
have a workforce. They, generally, contributed to the economic and social development processes and they had
clear positive and negative impacts on all aspects of life in the Gulf countries. One of these significant effects is
the impact of the emigrant workers on labor markets. Some previous studies that were conducted on the Gulf
labor markets have shown that expatriates work mainly in the private sector and in specific economic activities.
Although there are many studies that examine the distribution of expatriate labor at the national level in the Gulf
labor markets including the Sultanate of Oman, there are no enough studies that investigate this phenomenon
at the local levels. Therefore, this research aims to study the distribution of expatriate workers according to their
nationalities in labor markets at the Omani governorate›s level. This study will answer the following questions:
Are there any differences in the distribution of expatriate workers in regard to their nationalities at the various
economic activities in the Omani governorates? Is the labor market in Muscat and Dhofar Governorates,
for example, linked to specific nationalities that have homogeneous population characteristics? Does the
geographical environment, represented in the natural and human components as well as the various economic
circumstances of the governorates, have an impact on that distribution? Labor market segmentation theory
helped in understanding the dimensions of this study. Among the most important results are that there are some
governorates where migrant workers from certain nationalities are concentrated in specific economic sectors.
For example, Egyptians are concentrated in the education sector in the governorates of South Asharkia, Alwasta,
and Adahira. The Bangladeshi labor force is concentrated in fishing activity South Asharkia, Al-wasta and
Musandam. Various economic, demographic and administrative factors were responsible for this distribution.
