Investigating the Values and Dispositions of Novice Omani teachers and Factors Affecting their Development in the Omani Educational Context

The huge role that teachers play in today?s societies has made it of paramount importance that they are prepared with all that is required to make them highly effective teachers. As indicated earlier, the whole enterprise of teacher preparation cannot succeed if programs focus only on the knowledge that teachers need to gain and/or the skills/competencies they need to acquire. A better understanding of the dispositions that characterize novice teachers in the first few years after their employment and which are believed to affect all aspects of the teaching/learning acts that they go through is highly needed. It is hoped that the understanding of novice teachers? dispositions and the factors affecting their development will provide useful insights to teacher preparation programs in general and to the College of Education at Sultan Qaboos University in particular. The study will seek answers to the following questions: 1) What are the professional dispositions that characterize novice Omani teachers? 2) Are there significant differences in the dispositions that characterize novice Omani teachers attributed to: gender, university they graduated from, and governorate where they teach? 3) What are stakeholders? perceptions of the dispositions that characterize novice Omani teachers? 4) What factors (personal, educational, institutional, societal?etc) affect the shaping of these dispositions? 5) How do the values and dispositions of a novice teacher develop within the first two years of service? What direction do they take?As for the methodology and research approach, the researchers will utilize a flexible methodology that will integrate a variety of research methods and approaches from both qualitative and quantitative research paradigms. The research is mainly descriptive but it will also include a longitudinal design component in order to answer research question 5 of the study. The research will use three main research instruments: Questionnaires administered to novice school teachers to investigate their perceptions of the kind of dispositions they possess, and the type of factors that affect the development of these dispositions, focus group interviews with novice teachers and other stakeholders including parents and school principals to identify the factors that affect the shaping and development of dispositions, and a diary study following the development of dispositions of four novice teachers (two males and two females) in their first two years in the job. A representative sample of novice Omani teachers who have been in the job for at least three years will be selected from all eight educational governorates in Oman. Focus group interviews will also be conducted with specific groups of teachers and school principals from all governorates. Four teachers graduating from College of Education at Sultan Qaboos University will also be selected for the diary study.
