Genetic Characterization of Arabian Horses in Oman Using Genotyping by Sequencing

المشروع: Other project

تفاصيل المشروع

Description

Throughout history, horses have played a vital role in human civilization. They had a dramatic influence on agriculture, warfare, trade and transportation. Since their domestication 5,500 years ago, more than 400 various breeds were developed as a result of selection for a multitude of desirable phenotypes. Amongst the horse breeds, the Arabian horse was primarily selected for metabolic efficiency, endurance and strength. Severe desert conditions required a resilient animal with absolute loyalty. Arabian horses have become central to the survival and culture of the Bedouins in the Arabian peninsula. Therefore, Bedouins have for centuries traced their prized horses? ancestries and carefully examined them. Nevertheless, this tracing was mostly through word of mouth rather than an actual pedigree recording or registration. This makes tracing the current horses to their actual genetic ancestries a challenging task. Despite their importance and utility, no studies have been carried out to investigate the genetic background of Omani Arabian horses. Unfortunately, many horse owners abandoned their horses after the introduction of modern transportation in the 1970s which resulted in a decline in the Arabian horse population. Moreover, the recent introduction of thoroughbred horses in Oman could have resulted in a loss of the genetic identity of the local Omani Arabian horses. Genome-wide SNP data provides a robust and quantitative tool to assess the population structure and genetic diversity. They can also be utilized to resolve lineage assignments errors and provide genomic measures of inbreeding. The aim of this project is to decipher the genetic background in the Omani Arabian horses by comparing them to Arabian horses from a diverse genetic background. Genome wide SNP data obtained using genotyping by sequencing will be used to achieve this objective. Multi-dimensional Scaling Analysis (MDS), and clustering analysis will be performed to describe the relationships between Omani and other Arabian horses. Additionally, genomic inbreeding values, genomic diversity and pair-wise relatedness within Omani Arabian horses will be estimated from the genotypic data. The results of this project should unravel the genetic make-up and genetic diversity of the Arabian horses in Oman. These measures are crucial for decision makers as well as owners in shaping future policies and practices in breeding and management.
