Addressing and mapping spatio-temporal changes of mangrove vegetation along the northeastern coast of Oman

Mangrove vegetation is considered as a highly productive ecosystem, which provides a variety of food for microorganisms and many other marine species. The mangrove forests provide the community with several environmental and economic benefits and form suitable habitats for marine species. Mangrove forests can be a natural breakwater systems that protect the coastal areas from storm surges. In Oman, Mangrove ecosystems are found associated with lagoons and tidal inlets, especially in Al Batinah and Salalah coastal plains and in Mhoot Island. In general, there are some indications that the mangrove forests worldwide face several challenges and environmental degradation. The main aim of this research is to detect the occurrence and spatiotemporal changes of mangrove forests in Northeast coast of Oman, using remote sensing and GIS techniques, and then address the environmental hazards that may impact mangrove ecosystem.
